How do I make my existing email account secure in Outlook?

These instructions are specific to Outlook 2010. If you are using an earlier version of Outlook, go to Tools > Accounts on the menu instead of doing steps 1 & 2; the rest of the instructions should be the same or very close.

  1. Select the orange File tab at the top-left.
  2. Click Account Settings. A button will appear labelled "Account Settings... Add and remove accounts or change existing connection settings". Click this.
  3. A window will pop up with a list of your email accounts (there may only be one). Double-click on the account you need to change.
  4. Another window will pop up with account settings.
If Account type says IMAP, stop here and contact us. Otherwise, it will say POP3 and you can continue.
The only change you should need to make is:
Outgoing mail server: mail.wowiwa.net (i.e. it should now be the same as Incoming mail server
  5. Double-check the settings on this page are as follows:
Your name (as you want it to appear in emails you send to people)
    Your email address
    Account type: POP3
    Incoming mail server: mail.wowiwa.net
    Outgoing mail server: mail.wowiwa.net
User name: this needs to be your full email address, not just the bit before the @
Password: there should be a string of ********
    Remember password: ticked
Require logon using Secure Password Authentication (SPA): unticked
  6. Click the More Settings… button
  7. Select the Advanced tab and make the following changes:
    Incoming server (POP3): 995
Set the following type of encrypted connection: SSL (tick it)
    Outgoing server (POP3): 465
Set the following type of encrypted connection: SSL (select it from the dropdown selector)
  8. Click OK and the popup will disappear.
  9. Click Next and Outlook will test your account settings. You should get two ticks. Click Close.
  10. Click Finish and the account settings popup will disappear.
  11. Click Close and the other popup window will disappear.
